Barry graduated from Otago Medical School in 1986, having completed all his Medical training in Dunedin. He subsequently worked at Dunedin Hospital as a House Surgeon and Senior House Officer. He obtained Postgraduate Diplomas in Obstetrics and Paediatrics in the same year, 1989. In 1990 he completed the Family Medicine Training Programme year, during which time he was attached to a number of local General Practices, including Mornington Health Centre.

The next two years were spent engaged in overseas work and travel including two years Hospital Paediatric work, in the National Health Service in Britain.

In 1993 he returned to New Zealand, and undertook another two and a half years Paediatric training, two years in Wellington, and the remainder in Auckland, comprising time at Starship Children's Hospital, and National Women's Hospital. In 1995, Barry decided to return to General Practice and Dunedin. After working for approximately a year as a locum in another local practice, he joined Mornington as a Partner in mid 1996.

His particular areas of interest in General Practice are Paediatrics, Obstetrics, Geriatrics and medical law.

His Hobbies are: Armchair Sports, Ships, Trains and Planes, Computers, Electronics, Refurbishing his turn-of-the century villa, and assisting his wife in establishing and developing their garden as much as possible! Although he grew-up in Auckland, Barry has strong family links to Otago. This shows through in his dedicated support of the local Otago rugby teams. Barry is married to Jeanette, a trained Primary School teacher, and they have a son, Jonathon, and a daughter, Sophie.
