Penina is of Samoan NewZealand descent. She completed her medical degree at Otago University.
After working in a variety of positions in Dunedin Public Hospital she joined Mornington Health Centre in 2006 as a GP registrar.
Penina spent 2007 locuming and traveling overseas before returning as a full time locum for Mornington Health Centre.
Penina is married and has a large extended family in Dunedin.
