Sharleen Johnston was born and raised in Dunedin. She attended Otago Medical School and graduated in 1979. She completed two years as a house surgeon at Southland Hospital and completed her Diploma in Obstetrics and Part One of her general practice specialist training in 1982.
After a two month locum at Mornington Health Centre in 1983, she travelled to Asia and Europe, working for one year as a psychiatric Senior House Officer in England before returning to Rotorua, New Zealand, in 1985 to work as a Paediatric Registrar for six months.
In 1986, she spent a year in Invercargill working primarily as a Psychiatric Registrar but also worked in A&E, the Sexual Health Clinic, and Hospital Administration.
She returned to the Mornington Health Centre in December 1986, and worked as a locum for 15 months before joining the practice as a partner. During this time she completed her general practice specialist training. In addition to all aspects of general practice, Sharleen had a busy obstetric practicefor ten years. Sharleen has advanced qualifications in travel medicine and runs regular Travel Doctor Clinics.
Sharleen completed her BA in history in 2000. She is married to John, a veterinarian pathologist, and they have a son, Elliot, and daughter, Gabrielle. As well as her family, Sharleen's interests include swimming, reading, handiwork, bridge and flying (currently lapsed). |
