John trained at the Otago medical school, worked as a house officer, and as a registrar at Dunedin Hospital. In 1978, he joined Tim Medlicott and Tony Fitchett at the Mornington Health Centre.

While working at Dunedin Hospital he undertook further training in both obstetrics and paediatrics, both of which he has continued with in his general practice. He has recently completed a Diploma in Industrial Health. He has a special interest in paediatric medicine, and in particular, paediatric asthma. He is also involved in teaching students through both the department of General Practice and the department of Pharmacology at the University of Otago Medical School.

Sports medicine is another field he is interested in. He held the position of team doctor for both the Otago Rugby team and the Otago Highlanders from 1983 through to 1996.

He is married to Rowan and they have two children. Rebecca is a Pharmacist currently working in Tauranga.Michael has a Fine Arts degree and postgraduate degrees in Education and Art History from the University of Otago. He is currently exhibiting at Galleries in Dunedin Wellington and Wanaka while also teaching Art and Art History at the Otago Polytechnic school of art.
