Tony trained at Otago, worked as a house officer and registrar at Waikato Hospital and joined Dr Tim Medlicott at Mornington in late 1972. He has been a Medical Officer for the Little Sisters of the Poor since 1973.

He is involved in teaching students in general practice and training registrars in the General Practice Vocational Training Program.

His other interests include gardening and he is involved in the administration of the Anglican Church at local, national and international levels.

He is married to Bron and they have had four children, the eldest of whom also qualified in medicine but was killed with his girlfriend in an accident in 1996. A book of poems written by Tony since the accident has been published to raise money for the Rachael Gloag and Marcus Fitchett Memorial Education Trust. The trust will help medical students, especially those from low-income backgrounds.
