Hi I am Silke Hellwig the Dietitian at Mornington Health Centre - I arrived in NZ in early 1996 with the German qualification as a Doctors Assistant (Practice Nurse). I decided to immigrate to NZ for several reasons one of them could have been the lovely young man I met…! I worked for 6 years in mental health than studied and graduated with a BSc. in Human Nutrition, followed by a Postgraduate Diploma in Dietetics. I worked for 18 months in research at the Human Nutrition Department managing a randomized controlled trial encouraging people to consume “5+ Fruit and Vegetables” per day. Currently I am employed as the sole Dietitian by Waitaki District Health Service for two days per week at Oamaru Hospital. On Thursdays I work at “The Ashburn Clinic” as part of the eating disorders team.
In Feb. 2005 I started my own Company called Nutrition & Life Ltd. and joined the team at MHC. I see patients on Wednesday afternoons either one on one or in buddy sessions and support the Diabetes Prevention programme at MHC.
Other programmes offered through my business are a lifestyle programme for people with psychiatric disabilities, cooking demonstrations, supermarket tours, corporate nutrition education and menu assessment/development and nutrition consultations on Mondays at another medical center.
My strongest interests are in mental health, eating disorders and diabetes. However, I cover all aspects of nutrition except competitive level Sports Nutrition.
I love walking and teach with my husband Nordic walking – a new affordable sport for all ages new to NZ. Check out the website for Nordic walking: www.anwa.org.nz
In my spare time I enjoy gardening, walking my two dogs at Waikouaiti beach, traveling and entertaining. |
